While giving her first aid, police officers asked the girl what happened and she said she had been shot after getting home from school, according to court documents. The girl later told police at the hospital that she and her mother argued when she got home from school that turned physical, NBC Washington reported. According to reports, the mother told the girl to say she was shot by someone who broke into their home. Brown initially told police that a person experiencing homelessness shot her daughter and that she was already bleeding when she came home from school, according to police dispatch audio. Court documents show Brown gave conflicting statements during an interview with police and eventually admitted that she was the only one home with her daughter at the time of the shooting.
“I have to commend my officers for their rapid response and decisive actions at the scene. It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector. I am glad to hear that the victim is recovering at a local hospital, but the emotional trauma will remain for some time," said Seat Pleasant Acting Chief Heyward.
