Bowie Baysox Announces New Name, Image To Recognize Ties To Chesapeake Bay

The Bowie Baysox has announced a new name and image for the baseball program that honors its tie to the Chesapeake Bay region.

BOWIE, MD — Known since 1993 as the Bowie Baysox, the Baltimore Orioles' Double-A affiliate, has changed its name.

On Friday during an unveiling event at Annapolis's Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Bowie Baysox officially announced their new name as the Chesapeake Baysox.

While the Baysox have an updated name and a new look, they program will continue to operate out of Bowie's Prince George's Stadium. The switch to Chesapeake as the team's geographical signifier reflects the expansion of its fan base. Bowie is located approximately 20 miles west of Chesapeake Bay, with the Chesapeake Bay region including parts of six states as well as Washington, D.C., according to the Major League Baseball Pipeline.

During the 2024 season, from Maryland alone, the Baysox welcomed fans from 378 zip codes across the state, representing all of Maryland’s 23 counties. Beyond Maryland, the team welcomed fans from 1,733 zip codes across 42 other states, totaling 2,111 zip codes from 43 states. To better reflect its remarkable regional draw, the Bowie-based team will now be known as the Chesapeake Baysox.

"Chesapeake Baysox highlights the sense of pride in the region and a larger family of fans that are now supporting the team," said team owner Greg Baroni, CEO of Attain Sports. "While our new name reflects the broader fan base, we're honored to hold on to the local traditions and spirit of the Bowie name. We like to refer to it as Bowie, the home of the Chesapeake Baysox."
