Pedestrian Killed Following Police Chase In PG County

Authorities said the pedestrian was struck after police attempted to stop a car in the 3300 block of East-West Highway in Chillum​.

PRINGE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — State authorities are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed Friday night by a driver attempting to flee police.

According to the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division, the pedestrian was struck shortly after 10:15 p.m. when the Hyattsville City Police Department attempted to stop a Lincoln sedan in the 3300 block of East-West Highway in Chillum.

Investigators said the driver initially stopped but later fled police. The officer pursued the car for a short distance on westbound East-West Highway before calling off the pursuit as both cars were approaching the road's intersection with 23rd Avenue.

According to investigators, the driver of the sedan traveled through the intersection, sped onto the shoulder of the highway and struck a pedestrian on the side of the road.

pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not release the names of the driver or the victim. Names are generally released within two business days unless investigators require additional time.
