Stranger Sexually Assaults Woman In PG County: Police

SUITLAND, MD -- Police say a man sexually assaulted a woman in Suitland earlier this week, and he is in custody thanks to the actions of a witness who heard the woman screaming.

Police were called to the 4000 block of Silver Hill Road at around 7:30 p.m. on June 11 to a report of a sexual assault, and officers found a witness subduing the suspect at the scene, according to a report from the Prince George's County Police Department. Police say the witness stepped in when he heard the victim screaming for help.

Police arrested 39-year-old Michael Haskins on charges of first degree rape and assault, and he is being held without bond.

"The preliminary investigation reveals Haskins grabbed the adult female victim as she was walking," the report states. "He then sexually assaulted her not far from Silver Hill Road near a footpath. The victim and suspect do not know each other.

"There are no other sexual assaults reported in the area, but detectives would like to speak to anyone with information on Haskins to include whether he has committed a similar crime before," it continues.
