PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Four Prince George's County metro stations that have been closed since late May – Greenbelt, College Park, Prince George's Plaza and West Hyattsville – will reopen on Tuesday with upgraded amenities.

The green and yellow line stations' platforms have been completely rebuilt, and they now have new slip-resistant tiles, brighter energy-efficient LED lighting and illuminated handrails.

Additionally, more Passenger Information Displays have been installed along the platforms, with larger digital screens to improve visibility.

The stations also have new surveillance systems, clearer speakers for important announcements and safety call buttons that directly contact station mangers and the operations control center, a Metro news release said.

New modern, stainless steel faregates have been completely installed at all four stations, and Metro riders will have to switch to a new SmarTrip card per the subway's system-wide initiative to replace and upgrade faregates.

"We’re excited to welcome customers back to safer and more convenient stations, all while offering more trains and buses, longer hours, and lower prices," Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld said in a statement. "Metro’s aggressive capital program is making the system safer and more reliable for the entire region, and we’re now just three stations away from completing our goal of rebuilding 20 outdoor stations in need of these critical repairs."

Some residual construction will continue at the stations after they reopen, the news release said, and the Kiss & Ride at Fort Totten will close from Sept. 7 to 12 so personnel can replace meters, restripe the lot and move bollards.

Next summer, the Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton stations will be reconstructed, bringing Metro's four-year Platform Improvement Project to completion with a total of 20 new platforms, the news release said.

Additionally, beginning next week Metrorail will run until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and Metrorail riders can transfer to or from a Metrobus for free, according to the news release.
