📰 News we're reading

• Rally in Towson backs Baltimore County bills to protect immigrant residents (wypr.org) — Baltimore County legislation that could affect immigrants living in Catonsville is advancing, with rallies and public hearings underway in Towson on bills limiting county cooperation with immigration enforcement and creating an Office of Immigrant Affairs. Advocates say the measures would reduce fear and protect due process, while opponents argue they reward people who entered the country illegally ahead of those who followed legal channels.

• Rewriting history, more Moore appointments, remembering Jack Derr, in political notes (marylandmatters.org) — A historical note highlights that early-1900s Catonsville resident John Hubner, an immigrant from Bavaria, once served as Maryland House speaker and Senate president, revising claims about legislative firsts. The piece also covers the death of former Sen. Jack Derr, a new appointment to the State Board of Elections, and two new circuit court judges.
