500 Smoke Detectors, 5,000 Batteries Donated to Prince George's Fire Department for Safety Campaign

This weekend, members of the fire department will replace smoke alarms and their batteries within community homes.

As part of a community event this weekend, officers from the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department will distribute the 500 new smoke detectors donated from PEPCO and 5,000 batteries donated from Energizer to county residents.

In an effort to prevent house fires in the upcoming winter months, county firefighters will stop by area homes to verify that each household has functioning fire alarms. Using donations from Energizer’s annual Change Your Clock Change Your Battery campaign, they will replace batteries in smoke and carbon dioxide alarms.

Should a member of the fire department find a home without a working fire alarm or one that is over 10 years old, the department will supply and install a new 10-year alarm free of charge.

While the tamper-proof smoke detectors will not need a battery replacement within their lifetime, the fire department still recommends testing the alarm once a month.
