No Earth Day Plans? Consider Cleaning the Anacostia

The cleanup effort will span 20 sites around D.C. and Maryland, including College Park.

The Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) is holding an Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday at 20 sites throughout D.C., Prince George's and Montgomery counties.

According to a study conducted by AWS, the river still has a long way to go before it meets the standards set by the federal Clean Water Act. A "long way," in this case, may mean decades or even thousands of years.

“Unfortunately, we’re not improving water quality in the Anacostia fast enough to make the river fishable and swimmable, perhaps in our lifetimes,” AWS President James Foster said in a press release.
