Oh (Expletive), it's Tax Day

You forgot, didn't you. It's OK. We're here to help.

So you forgot to do your taxes. They're due the same time every year (and this time, you had three extra days), but you've just been so busy these last few months, you know?

It's OK. We're here to help. And fortunately, a number of area tax professionals are, too.

James Goosby, owner of Goosby Tax Service LLC in Hyattsville, said he'd already helped around 10 people with their taxes before noon, and expects business will only pick up as the day wears on.

His business, which normally takes customers on an appointment-basis only, will remain open a few extra hours past its usual 6 p.m. closing time for last-minute stragglers. He also let us in on a little secret: if you are due a refund, you actually have up to three years to file your taxes.

"I hear so much on the news that people have to file by a certain day," he said. "It makes me laugh."

Nevertheless, people tend to want their money back in their wallets in a timely manner, and there are plenty of options for help in the area.

In addition to Goosby, there are two H&R Block locations on either side of College Park: two in Greenbelt, and one in Hyattsville.

Both locations will stay open until 9 p.m., but because today is especially hectic, an appointment is recommended. Tax services start at $80.

If you're more inclined to DIY, there are plenty of programs available to guide you through the process. The Target stores in both Prince George's Plaza and Greenbelt are currently sold out of TurboTax software, but you can download the program on the TurboTax website.

If there's just no way the taxes are getting done today, you can file for an extension. The IRS website is easy to navigate and generally undaunting -- just make sure you file before midnight.
