Man Killed After Driving Vehicle Into Columbia Building
A driver has died after crashing his vehicle into a Columbia building. The incident is being investigated by Howard County Police.
COLUMBIA, MD — A man has died after driving his vehicle into the back of the Humanim, Inc., building Wednesday in Columbia. No one else was injured.
Howard County Police were called to the 9300 block of Gerwig Lane at 12:04 p.m. on May 7. Officers arrived and found the car inside the building and the driver dead, according to the police department. He has been identified as Gustavo Martins Vieira, 48, of Washington, D.C.
Investigators do not yet know the cause of the crash, but they are actively investigating. Witnesses reported that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. Preliminarily, police do not believe this was an intentional act, the department stated.

Firefighters also were on the scene and the Howard County Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits were called to the scene to evaluate the structural integrity of the affected building, which was evacuated, the police department stated.
