​Karen Annette Canfield, 75

Canfield served as everything from deacon to choir director at the Columbia Baptist Fellowship.

Karen Annette (nee Berg) Canfield, 75, passed away peacefully on Jan. 7. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernie Berg and Rosalie (Schmidt) Berg.

Born at St Mary’s Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma, on Aug. 10, 1942, Karen graduated from Enid High School in
1960. She earned her B.A. from Oklahoma State University in 1964, and later earned her M.L.A. from
Johns Hopkins University in 1974. She volunteered at the Henry Street Settlement House in New York
City during her college summer break, where she gained an appreciation for life on the East Coast.
She was a dedicated and talented high school U.S. history teacher. After spending her early teaching
years in Heath, Ohio, and New Haven, Connecticut, she spent over 30 years teaching in the Baltimore County School System at Woodlawn High and Hereford High.

Karen was extremely devoted to the Columbia Baptist Fellowship in Maryland for over 30 years, where she served as deacon, choir director, pianist/organist, and Sunday school teacher. She also served as choir director of the Alleluias for 13 years. Over her lifetime she contributed to many worthwhile social causes, and traveled extensively throughout Europe, making special trips to China and the Holy Lands with her sister Denice.

Karen is survived by her two loving sons, Brad and Jeff, of whom she was very proud, her daughters-in-
law Julie and Laura, her cherished grandsons, Jake, Ted, Kyle, Bobby, and Harry, and six nieces and
nephews. She is also survived by her beloved siblings, John Berg and his wife Debbie, and Denice
Fothergill and her husband Tim, with whom she shared many laughs, good times, and great memories.
Karen lived a full and meaningful life, leaving a lasting impression on countless students, fellow church
members, family, and friends with her teaching, her music, and her love and compassion. She will be
deeply missed.
