11 Teachers Retiring from Local Schools

Eleven teachers who serve in local public schools are retiring this year in addition to seven administrators who are leaving throughout the county.

According to a document shared by Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) spokesman Bob Mosier, South River High, Edgewater, Mayo, Deale and Lothian elementary schools are each losing long-serving educators this fall. 

Many of the teachers retiring throughout the county have served their communities for 30 years or more.

Listed below are the teachers and administrators retiring from local schools, with their total years of service in the education field.

Central Elementary

• Carole Day, reading teacher, 32 years.

Deale Elementary

• Henry McNeil, general teacher, 32 years.

Edgewater Elementary

• Viola Ciancaglini, 4th grade teacher, 21 years.
• Donna Riesett, special education teacher, 33 years.

Lothian Elementary

• Patricia Pumphrey, general teacher, 35 years.

Mayo Elementary

• Enid Gast, 5th grade teacher, 25 years.
• Helen Nelson, 5th grade teacher, 27 years.
• Betty Robins, general teacher, 38 years.

South River High

• Elaine Boothby, English Department chairwoman, 40 years.
• Dan Ehrenfeld, English teacher, 17 years.
• Stephen Hanson, math teacher, 18 years.

Several administrators throughout the county also are retiring:

• Rosemary Biggart, Arnold Elementary, 40 years.
• Diane Bragdon, Bates Middle.
• Walter Jackson, Park Elementary, 34 years.
• Sharon Morell, Severna Park Middle, 39 years.
• Donna Pergerson, Cape St. Claire Elementary principal, 38 years.
• Samuel Perry, Meade Middle Assistant principal, 32 years.
• Joyce Sims, Waugh Chapel Elementary, 33 years.
• Christine Stockett, West Annapolis Elementary, 39 years.
