ATW Closing Up Shop in Edgewater

The hardware store has been open since 1988, but said lack of sales was the reason for the close.

After more than 20 years, ATW Hardware and Supply in Edgewater is closing its doors for good.

The store opened on Pike Ridge Road in 1988, and owner Ted Kramer said lack of business led to the decision to close.

“Loss of sales, it’s just not there,” Kramer said. “It’s been going on for a while.”

Kramer said he couldn’t really blame any one thing for the decline in business—it has just been building over time.

“The bottom line is when … you have a 2,000 calorie metabolism and you’re only getting 1,800—you’re going to starve,” Kramer said. “That’s nothing personal; that’s just how it is."

ATW is commonly known around town for the unique displays on the roof that Kramer frequently changed. He said he originally started the display because people said they didn’t know the store was there.

Customers said they chose to shop at ATW because the staff was knowledgable and friendly. Kramer said he was grateful to those people.

“I certainly appreciate all the good customers, and I have had a lot of laughs,” Kramer said. “Like any job the people make it a pleasure. . I don’t hold anyone responsible it’s just the way things are.”
