Davidsonville Man Seeks Alternative Careers for 'Unsuccessful' Thoroughbreds

Steuart Pittman's passion is taking him to Kentucky this weekend, where he'll speak with horse owners about alternative ways to utilize thoroughbreds.

A Davidsonville man’s passion for giving thoroughbred racehorses a second chance at new careers is taking him to a special weekend event in Kentucky on Saturday.

Steuart Pittman, founder and director of the Retired Racehorse Training Project in Davidsonville, focuses on taking horses that disappointed on the racetrack and transitioning to off-the track events.

According to Kentucky.com, unwanted or unsuccessful racehorses can often be broken down and sent to slaughter by their owners. But Pittman’s project is helping these owners look into alternative solutions.

On Saturday in Lexington, KY, some of Pittman’s thoroughbreds will participate in “eventing” competitions as part of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event weekend. There, instead of racing at breakneck speeds, the horses will perform dressage, race over large fences and go through a show-jumping course, according to Kentucky.com.

In addition to the event, Pittman will speak at a symposium to educate the sport-horse industry on alternative ways to utilize talented horses even off the racetrack.

“We believe people in the sport-horse industry have to step up and educate people,” Pittman told Kentucky.com.
