Edgewater Books to Host Kids' Engineering Classes
Kids ages 7-11 will get to design and build a variety of projects as part of the class.

If you've got a future Einstein on your hands, or a child who is creative and loves to build new things, the newest class offerings at Edgewater Books might be just the thing to inspire.
The store is hosting a five-week mechanical engineering class for children ages 7-11, beginning Nov. 5. The classes are being run by Engineering for Kids, a local business franchise run by former school teacher and Arnold resident Lauren Ravik.
Ravik was drawn to the program because she thought engineering classes would be a great extension of the school day.

“We’re really focusing on doing problem solving and letting them come up with solutions. Kids get to design their own projects and build them,” Ravik said.
Each class will focus on a different project. Kids will get the chance to design and build a different project each week. Roller coasters, catapults, dragsters and an egg drop challenger are just a few of the things on the syllabus.

“It’s very hands on and the kids are super motivated to make their designs and test them,” Ravik said. “They are really problem solving and answering their own questions. It’s a great learning opportunity,” she added.
This will be the first time Ravik has offered classes in Edgewater, but she has hosted similar courses in Severna Park, Crofton and Arnold.
The class will run from Nov. 5 to Dec. 10. Class will meet at Edgewater Books from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday evenings, and the fee per child is $120, which covers all materials. Advance registration is required at www.engineeringforkids.netannearundel and registrants can enter the code ed2013 to get $10 off the fee. For more information, call Ravik at 410-575-3353.
