Edgewater Student Takes Artistic Talents to Bookstore

Edgewater Books may not be opening for another month, but local student Nick Davidowski is hard at work painting a mural on the walls of the store.

The new bookstore will open on Central Avenue August 19, and owner Ken Kennedy wanted to give a local student the opportunity to share their artistic talents on the walls of his store.

Nick, a rising seventh-grader at Bates Middle School was up to the task of designing a theme for the store.

“[Kennedy] didn’t really tell me anything; he just left it up to me to design,” Nick said. “I asked my mom, and she told me that I should include some kind of beach scene with a boat since that kind of represents our area.”

With help from his mom, Nick decided to go with a beach theme, and is currently working on painting a boat that says Edgewater Books. He said he plans to build off that theme for the rest of the store.

While Nick’s mom may have helped him with an idea, he said it was his grandmother who first got him into painting.

“When I was 3 my grandmother got me started. She is really good at art and she kind of taught me how to draw things,” Nick said. “I just realized that I really liked to do it and I spent most of my time drawing or painting.”

While at Edgewater Elementary School and now at Bates Middle, Nick said he has completed many art projects, and participated in about seven shows.

Giving someone the opportunity to practice their art skills and show off their passion is exactly why Kennedy said he wanted a student working on the store.

“It makes it more personal,” Kennedy said. “It provides a closer connection to the community. Nick lives right here in the area and it gives him the opportunity to showcase his talents.”

Area residents can see Nick’s finished product when Edgewater Books opens at 951 Central Ave. on Aug. 19.
