Police say a Lothian man is responsible for an incident where a police officer was struck by a vehicle.

Police say a Lothian man was responsible for the serious accident Sunday night that caused an officer to be struck by a vehicle and sent to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department announced Tuesday that Leo Lamont Carroll, 23, of the 5200 block of Sands Road in Lothian, faces multiple charges in connection with the incident where an officer was hit by a vehicle.

The county police officer was struck Sunday night during a routine traffic stop on Maryland Route 665 near Riva Road in Parole, according to police.

The incident occurred around 9:17 p.m. after Cpl. Kevin Mont requested that a vehicle pull over and the driver stopped in the left travel lane. Mont got out of his cruiser and asked the driver to pull ahead onto the right shoulder of the roadway, according to a release from police.

As Mont walked back to his cruiser, a Toyota Celica reportedly slowed but was then struck in the rear by an Acura RL that witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

Mont ran into the grass median, but the impact from the crash projected the Celica across the median where it hit Mont, according to the release.

The Acura struck a second vehicle in the right travel lane and then a guardrail, authorities said. Three people in the Acura fled on foot into the woods. Two were later located near the Regatta Bay community and were released without being charged, according to police.

Mont, a 23-year veteran of the police department, was flown by Maryland State Police Medevac to the Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition as of Monday morning.

Police identified Carroll as the driver of the Acura, according to the release.
