Mayo Elementary Educator Named AACPS Employee of the Month
Tomo Hicks, a teacher's assistant from Mayo Elementary, was emotional after winning the award.
The Anne Arundel County Board of Education recognized teacher’s assistant Tomo Hicks as Employee of the Month during a hearing Wednesday.
Hicks, an 11-year veteran in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), was visibly moved by the recognition as she received a certificate and a teacher’s bell in the AACPS board room.
“It’s overwhelming. It makes me feel really good,” Hicks said about winning the award. “It’s just great to know people see what I’m doing. It helps me know I’m making a difference.”

The award was a complete surprise for Hicks, who was brought by her colleagues under a false pretense.
Hicks said working with children is what “keeps her going,” and that despite the award, seeing children progress in their education is her ultimate goal.

The Annapolis resident works exclusively with first-grade students and spends much of her time conducting “reading intervention programs” to increase a child’s literacy.
Board member Amalie Brandenburg presented Hicks with the award, and cited her reading initiatives as a key reason as to why she received the monthly award. Accompanied by her mother and brother, Hicks received a loud applause from all attending the meeting Wednesday morning.
The board also recognized individuals for Teacher of the Month and Volunteer of the Month.
