Severe Thunderstorm Warning In Effect For These MD Counties

Shortly after 4 p.m., the National Weather Service said a line of severe thunderstorms was moving through the state.

MARYLAND — The National Weather Service on Thursday issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several Maryland counties as a line of strong storms moved through the region.

The warning is in effect until 4:45 p.m. for Anne Arundel, Prince George's and Calvert counties.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the NWS said severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Upper Marlboro to Rosaryville, moving east at 25 mph.

Affected locations include Harwood, West River, Tracys Landing, Lothian, Cheltenham, Friendship, Shady Side, Deale, Rhode River, Rosaryville, Marlton, Galesville, Upper Marlboro, Andrews Air Force Base, Dunkirk, Owings, Clinton, Mayo and Brandywine.

Threats associated with the storm include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Power outages and downed trees are also possible, forecasters said.

"Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles," the alert stated. "Roadways may become blocked by downed trees."

The latest National Weather Service forecast for Maryland:

Thursday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 67. Northeast wind 10 to 13 mph becoming northwest. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday Night: Scattered showers, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. West wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 52. West wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 69. West wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 53.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 57.

Memorial Day: Partly sunny, with a high near 70.

Monday Night: A chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
