South River Teen Wins $20,000 in Dell Scholarship

’s Caitlin Byrnes received $20,000, a laptop computer and a printer after she was named as a winner in the Dell Scholars Program.

Byrnes, a senior at South River, is an editor on the school’s newspaper, a member of the National Honor Society and played on the varsity girls soccer team, according to an Anne Arundel County Public Schools release. She will be attending Washington College in Chestertown in the fall.

The Dell Foundation has awarded 300 scholarships annually since 2004 and provides students with millions of dollars in college scholarships, according to a release.

Byrnes earned the award for demonstrating a desire and ability to overcome barriers to achieve her goals. Each application for the scholarship is evaluated based on a student’s determination to succeed and their self-motivation, according to the release.
