Top 5 Stories: Gymnasts, Protests and Attacks on Police

A brief look at the biggest headlines from May 6-12.

 

Lots of faces filled the front page of Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch this week. Whether it was an Olympic hopeful or a guy who allegedly bit a police officer while on phencyclidine (PCP), it was a full week.

No. 1—

Anne Arundel County police arrested a Riva woman accused of having sex with her friend’s teenage son in Texas, according to The Capital.

According to HoustonPress.com, police in Harris County, TX, issued a warrant for Karen Carstens’ arrest for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old boy on multiple occasions while his mother was hospitalized. Police had Carstens at the Jennifer Road Detention Center awaiting extradition.

No. 2—

South River’s boys lacrosse team finished its regular season by defeating Glenelg High in the District V Championship game, .

Patch interviewed the team’s head coach, , and learned what has helped the team reach perfection so far this year. We also learned the head coach still carries his 2009 state championship ring with him to work everyday. 

No. 3—

About 11 years ago, Shawn Beal sat beside the  in Annapolis watching her 5-year-old son A.J. attempt a flip on the diving board.

Fast forward to the present and A.J. is going to compete in the Junior Olympic National Championships for the third year in a row. The championships will be held in in Cincinnati, OH, from May 8-13.

Standing 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds, the  junior and He will compete in six events—rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar, pummel horse and the floor exercise.

No. 4—

In two separate cases last week, men allegedly fought police while under the influence of phencyclidine (PCP).

On Monday, a Shady Side man allegedly while possibly under the influence of drugs, according to a police press release.

A day later, in Edgewater after they tried to take him into protective custody, according to police.

No. 5—

  Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold’s  for fiscal year 2013 on Friday morning outside the school on Mayo Road.

The school’s PTA president, Jenny Corkill, told Patch the parents in the near future in Leopold’s budget. 

“Our school has the worst condition of all schools in the county, based on Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ study, and we are at over 120 percent capacity,” Corkill told Patch.
