WATCH: Cherry Blossoms 'Snow' in Howard County

The Elkridge branch and other county libraries receive donated trees, which came to the U.S. 100 years ago as a gift.

The District isn't the only area around here with canopies of pink lining streets and sidewalks–Howard County has seen its fair share of cherry blossom blooms too.

Cherry tree buds in the area opened prematurely, according to The Washington Post, which described the scene as "snowing" with petals. The National Cherry Blossom Festival will continue through April 27, although experts doubt the blossoms will survive that long, reports the Post.

Japan gave more than 3,000 cherry trees to the United States in an effort to forge a diplomatic friendship between the countries 100 years ago, according to the New American.

The Howard County Library System adds to the local cherry tree population every year with the Blossoms of Hope project, which allows businesses to purchase and dedicate new cherry trees at the , and branches.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, the will host a lantern-making session so people can create their own luminaries to carry in the April 27 Cherrybration parade in Ellicott City.
