1st Children's Museum In Howard County Opens Saturday With Interactive Exhibits
The first children's museum in Howard County opens Saturday with interactive exhibits and special rooms depicting a 19th century mill town.
HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The new Ellicott Mills Children's Museum will hold a grand opening April 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the EC250 commemoration celebration. The museum serves as an interactive hands-on educational center focusing on the history and culture of those who lived and worked in a 19th century mill town.
Located at 3725 Park Avenue, there will be a period-focused school room, general store room, wheat grinding room and a great room to explore. There's also a garden featuring period-relevant herbs and flowers.
The Ellicott Mills Children's Museum is the first children's museum to open in the county. Housed in the old Quaker School/Weir House, the existing "modern" upper enclosure was removed during the renovation process to reveal three ornate windows and front wall of the salt box roof. Over the years, the house has seen several alterations and the local historical society believes that the original stone building was used as a hospital during the War of 1812.
