Gaithersburg to Conduct Automated Pavement Assessment

The City will be gathering data to evaluate road quality in the upcoming months.

Gaithersburg, MD (July 27, 2016) Beginning the second week of August and running through December, a van outfitted with special equipment will be traversing the 91 miles of roadway in the City of Gaithersburg to collect data that will help determine ride quality and capture precise measurements of cracks and other defects. The van travels at speed to collect the data.

Each year the City allocates funding from the Capital Improvement Program for pavement repair and rehabilitation. The collection of pavement condition data will help the City budget more accurately and determine where and when to use that funding for maximum effect. The software assigns an aggregated condition index for each roadway, which the City will then use to determine the most cost effective repair treatment. This allows Gaithersburg to take a more proactive approach to maintaining its pavements in uniform condition. The data will be integrated into the City’s GIS system for additional use and analysis.
