Charter school leaders urge school board not to revoke its license (mymcmedia.org) ā€” Gaithersburgā€™s MECCA Business Learning Institute, the countyā€™s only charter school, is fighting a possible loss of its charter for sixth and seventh grades at a Jan. 22 Board of Education meeting. MCPS officials cite noncompliance with special education and other requirements, while school leaders insist theyā€™ve corrected issues and say families and students will be harmed if the Gaithersburg program is shut down.

Winning Lottery Ticket Turns Montgomery County Duo Into Millionaires (mocoshow.com) ā€” A Montgomery County duo just became millionaires thanks to a $20 FAST PLAY ticket bought at Lakeforest Exxon on North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg. The pair, longtime lottery partners, nearly drove away before deciding to try one last MONOPOLY Properties game, which hit for $1 million. The Gaithersburg station also earns a $1,000 retailer bonus.

Silver Spring woman charged with manslaughter in high-speed crash that killed elderly driver (shorenewsnetwork.com) ā€” Montgomery County Police, reporting from Gaithersburg, say a 23-year-old Silver Spring woman has been charged with manslaughter by vehicle after a high-speed crash that killed an 85-year-old driver. Investigators allege she was weaving through traffic at more than double the speed limit on Randolph Road in Silver Spring before the August 2025 collision that fatally injured the elderly passenger.

Penn State transfer will reunite with Jim Knowles at Tennessee (usatoday.com) ā€” A former Quince Orchard High School standout from Gaithersburg, defensive lineman Xavier Gilliam, is transferring from Penn State to play for Tennessee. The redshirt freshman, who saw action in 17 games for the Nittany Lions, will reunite with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, recently hired by Tennessee after stints at Ohio State and Penn State.
