Rumored Threat To Gaithersburg High School Investigated By Police

Police say they are investigating a rumor circulating on social media of a threat made towards Gaithersburg High School.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Police say they are investigating a rumored threat made towards Gaithersburg High School, according to reports.

Montgomery County Police told ABC 7 on Monday night that they're looking into the rumor posted on social media, but they do not believe it's credible.

It's been nearly a week since 17 people were gunned down at a Parkland, Florida high school, and in the days since Montgomery County schools have seen a rash of threats.

The rumor comes days after a 15-year-old student was arrested for allegedly making online threats to Northwest High School in Germantown.

Principal Jimmy D'Andrea sent a message to parents stating that a student called police to report a social media post that mentioned guns and warned students not to come to the school Friday.

On Feb. 15, Alwin Chen, 18, of Germantown was arrested for bringing a loaded handgun and knife to Clarksburg High School.

Montgomery County Police said in a news release: "MCP encourages parents to have a conversation with their children about responsible social media posts. Parents are reminded to monitor their child's social media accounts and encourage them to not to re-post or share rumors or threats. Instead of sharing the posts, they should contact an adult. Remember, if you see something, say something."
