GAITHERSBURG, MD — No one was in the building when a fire started at the South House Restaurant Friday morning, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer.

It likely began as a fire from cigarette butts in an outside planter that then spread, Piringer posted on Twitter. Staff noticed smoke coming out of similar planters last night and poured water on it, said Piringer. There were no injuries from the fire.

Fire crews were checking void spaces and nearby businesses at 8:30 a.m., when the fire had been knocked down at the restaurant. The estimated damage was less than $10,000.
