GERMANTOWN, MD — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working on letting all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

How do you know the local hero?

I am his mother.

What does the local hero do?

He is a supply Navy officer stationed in Guam. Currently, his boat is deployed with an unknown return date.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

I believe we should honor not only him but his boat's entire crew for the sacrifice they are making in order to keep us safe. My son provides a great dose of optimism for the crew of his boat with his big smile.

I can only say Dalton and the crew are underwater and will be for the next 7 to 9 months. Please tell me if there is a greater sacrifice than this one since we cannot have any contact with the crew until they come up for supplies.

My daughter-in-law is expecting their first child and she had to return to Maryland because of a right-risk pregnancy and lack of the specialty doctor she needs in Guam. He is happy that she is surrounded by both families but it is very hard to have your first child and not to have your spouse around.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

Shop (his nickname) and his smile keep the crew happy and upbeat. Though he tells me, one thing we do not hear about it is how many soldiers are taking their lives on a weekly basis. So, anyone that can help keep morale up and a soldier alive is a special person.

Thank you for all you do, Dalton S. Rosario II!
