The boy was flown to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where medical staff concluded the injuries were highly suspicious of non-accidental trauma.

Detectives were told by the child’s mother that she ran errands while Garrett watched the child. When she returned, she saw Garrett walking with the toddler wearing clothing inappropriate for the weather.

When the mother confronted Garrett, he refused to give her the child and the woman called 911. Police later found Garrett alone when they responded to a different 911 call in the area.

About ten hours after the first 911 call by the boy’s mother, the child was brought to Frederick Health Hospital by Garrett’s mother. Investigators determined the child’s injuries were acute and occurred when he was in the care of his father, prosecutors said.

Judge Raymond Brubaker told Garrett in court, “You must get a handle on your drug issues to establish a healthy relationship with your son.”

Upon release, Garrett will serve five years of supervised probation with special conditions, including no contact with the victim and no unsupervised contact with any minor child.
