Area Senior Centers Announce April Events

The Pascal and Brooklyn Park senior centers recently released their planned activities for April.

Here's a list of planned activities at the Pascal and Brooklyn Park senior centers, according to press releases from the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.

  • April 3—The Pascal Go-Getters, an entertainment troupe comprised of members of the center, will present a musical celebration of spring including two Easter songs at 12:30 p.m.
  • April 5—Soloist Heidi Sturniolo will perform a program of harp music at 12:30 p.m. The free performance is sponsored by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County and the Pascal Seniors Inc. and is open to the public.
  • April 6—Closed is observance of Good Friday.
  • April 9—Closed for a county service reduction day.
  • April 13—Members are encouraged to sign up now to participate in the Multi-Center Billiards Tournament to be held at the O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Rd. in Odenton. Arrive at that center at 8:30 a.m. with play starting at 9 a.m. Cpl. Jimmy Millers,  the police department liaison with the Department of Aging and Disabilities, will oversee the tournament.
    A belly dancing workshop also will be held April 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the center with Joanne DeWilde, aka Sasha. The class promotes flexibility and is designed to strengthen legs, back, arms and stomach. The $5 cost can be paid at registration.
  • April 20—Impersonator Al Long of Philadelphia returns to present “George Burns and Friends” at 12:30 p.m.
  • April 23—Learn what hypnosis is and how it can improve life during “Understanding Hypnosis” at 10 a.m. Elizabeth Lasner, a registered nurse and board certified hypnotherapist, will answer questions and explain how hypnosis can be used to stop smoking, help reduce stress, change eating patterns and improve memory.
  • April 26—Obtain information about a “Reverse Mortgage” at a seminar led by the Anne Arundel Community Action Agency at 10 a.m. The program will explain how the financial tool works.
  • April 30—The deadline to sign up to volunteer or donate items for the May 4 flea market, craft and bake sale, fine art exhibit and flower mart is April 30. The event will last from 9 a.m.-2 pm. Donations of "treasures and baked goods" are needed, but no clothing, shoes or furniture will be accepted.

  • April 2—Enjoy a favorite lunchtime sandwich during Peanut Butter and Jelly Day at the center from noon-12:30 p.m. Make a perfect PB&J with marshmallows, bananas, honey or whipped cream. You can even make a triple-decker sandwich. Iced tea also will be served.
  • April 5—Join the Easter Bonnet Parade and participate in egg coloring from 10-11:30 a.m. at the center, which will provide the eggs and dye. Afterward, put on the “Easter bonnet will all the frills upon it” and parade. You decide what type of hat to wear.
  • April 6—Closed is observance of Good Friday.
  • April 9—Closed for a county service reduction day.
  • April 17—The center is planning a trip to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. The bus will leave the center at 7:45 a.m. and return at 8:30 p.m. For information and reservations, call 410-222-6847 or stop by the office.
  • April 20—A representative from Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland will discuss the program and provide information for potential volunteers who deliver two meals a day—one hot and one cold—to clients between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The 30-minute presentation begins at 10:45 a.m.
  • April 23—Genesis Hammonds Lane Center will be at the center from 10:30-11 a.m. to discuss Earth Day, which has been celebrated on April 22 each year since 1963.
