Detectives think the victim and the suspect were having a conversation that escalated until the shots were fired. Police believe this was a targeted shooting, not a random act of violence.

A witness reported seeing a young male running from the scene, Davis said.

Officers announced the shooting on Twitter at 1:04 p.m. Authorities sent a follow-up tweet at 1:25 p.m. announcing that the victim had died and that homicide detectives were on their way to investigate.

Five Anne Arundel County Public Schools sheltered in place during the investigation. AACPS lifted the lockdown at 1:50 p.m. Thursday. Schools then returned to their normal operations.

AACPS said these were the affected schools:

  • Old Mill High School
  • Old Mill Middle School North
  • Old Mill Middle School South
  • Rippling Woods Elementary School
  • Ruth Eason School

Rippling Woods Elementary is 0.8 miles from where the shooting happened, making it the closest school to the scene.

AACPS said everybody was safe inside their classrooms, but nobody was allowed in or out of the buildings. Classes continued on their normal schedules inside.

Police asked anybody with information to call the homicide unit at (410) 222-4731. Tipsters can stay anonymous by dialing (410) 222-4700.
