Severn Savings Bank Equips Students for Learning

Schools throughout Anne Arundel County will start the year fully equipped with the necessary supplies thanks to a special effort from and the surrounding community.

According to a release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), the bank gathered more than 7,000 school supplies from its employees and partners to benefit students throughout the region.

AACPS partnered with the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services to match donations with local elementary schools to help kids go back to school fully equipped for learning. From July 10 to Aug. 11, Severn Savings Bank collected backpacks and other supplies at its branches throughout the county. There is a Severn Savings Bank located at 413 Crain Highway, SE, in Glen Burnie.

Communities throughout the area rallied to collect 758 packs of crayons, 741 spiral notebooks, 950 folders and 510 rulers, according to the bank’s press release.

The supplies will now help fill more than 200 backpacks set to be distributed to children in need before school begins, AACPS reported.

“The need is just incredible and this generous donation from Severn Bank will go a long way to help so many students,” said Teresa Tudor, senior manager of AACPS’ Office of School and Family Partnerships in the release. “In this continued difficult economy, the work of our partners is even more crucial to the success of our students.”

In addition to the effort, about 3,500 people donated more than 1,300 backpacks to the school system when they attended the AACPS Back-to-School Expo last week in Glen Burnie, according to AACPS.

“We were overwhelmed by the response to our call to help children in need prepare for a successful school year,” said Alan J. Hyatt, president and chief executive officer of Severn Savings Bank. “We are delighted that the Department of Education will get these school supplies into the hands of the kids that need them most.”
