Here are the top stories in Glen Burnie today:

  1. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' November jobs report was a mixed bag of positive and negative news. The unemployment rate continued to move closer to pre-pandemic levels, but the number of new jobs reported was lower than expected. Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate dropped from 4.6 percent to 4.2 percent from October to November, according to the BLS. That rate improved since September in the Glen Burnie area and continues to be lower than it was at the beginning of the pandemic. The Anne Arundel County unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in October, down from 4.5 percent in September. That reflected some improvement from October 2020, when the unemployment rate stood at 5.2 percent. (Glen Burnie Patch)
  2. Severna Park High School will host the fifth annual high school basketball tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 29, and Thursday, Dec. 30. This family-friendly event includes JV and varsity high school athletes from Severna Park, Annapolis Area Christian School, Old Mill, South River, and Glen Burnie. Daily admission will be $5 cash, good for one full day. Concessions will be available during the event. For more information, visit www.severnaparkathletics.org. (Severna Park Voice)
  3. If you're in the market for a new home, there's a good chance you've already combed through all the internet listings for your area. And while you presumably have gotten a decent idea of what these houses are like from the photos, you just can't beat an in-person encounter with the real thing. To help the prospective buyers in the Glen Burnie area, we've listed the two most recent homes to hit the local market, with information included on the next scheduled open houses. 4. Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Anne Arundel Department of Health are again teaming up to offer another round of COVID-19 Pfizer vaccination clinics for children ages 5 to 11 at four elementary schools beginning next week. The clinics follow similar ones at 24 elementary schools across the county where more than 1,700 children received vaccinations. The clinics, which will run from 5 -7:30 p.m., are first-dose clinics. Families of children who previously received their first dose have already been provided information for second-dose clinics. (Press Release Desk)
  5. Maryland young people are joining the growing number of content creators on TikTok despite the lack of a robust local community. Digital content creation is among the rising jobs of 2021 as the labor market shifted during the pandemic, according to a LinkedIn report. TikTok, the social media and video app, announced one billion users in September, directly thanking users like small businesses and creators for the milestone. (Baltimore Fishbowl)
