Local Cub Scout Earns Prestigious STEM-Focused Supernova Award
Sawyer Calhoun has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

Sawyer Calhoun, a dedicated Webelos Arrow of Light from Pack 377 at Fort Meade, has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the esteemed Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Award from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).
Sawyer, a fifth-grade student at Monarch Academy in Glen Burnie, Md., demonstrated admirable commitment to exploring STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts. His work included engaging in discussions with STEM professionals, constructing and launching a model rocket, researching five notable scientists, technology innovators, engineers, or mathematicians, and successfully building a functional electrical circuit, among other achievements. His enthusiasm led to the culmination of his journey with the attainment of this prestigious award, an honor reserved for fourth and fifth graders who exhibit an interest in STEM exploration.
The Charles H. Townes Award is one of BSA’s highest STEM awards for Webelos and must be earned by an individual Scout collaborating closely with a trained mentor.

During his recent Cub Scout Bridging Ceremony, Sawyer was presented with the Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Bronze Medal, having previously earned both the Cub Scouts Can Code and Tech Talk Cub Scout Nova Awards. Reflecting on his journey, Sawyer expressed, “I didn’t really know about the Supernova Award, but it was really fun to do and interesting. All Cub Scouts should think about doing this. I especially liked launching rockets and making a simple circuit and had a good time completing all the requirements!”
Looking ahead, Sawyer expressed, “I am also excited to bridge from Cub Scouts to Scouts and join Troop 477.” His anticipation of joining the ranks of Troop 477 signifies a continuation of his scouting journey and further opportunities for growth and adventure.
