Police: Officer Installed Bathroom Camera at GBHS 'On His Own Volition'

Anne Arundel County Police have placed a 14-year veteran of the Special Services Bureau on leave pending an investigation after a student discovered a camera inside a men's bathroom at Glen Burnie High School on Wednesday morning.

Police said they are opening a criminal investigation into the camera's installation, which the officer reportedly did "on his own volition" without the knowledge of the school system or police department.

No recorded images or video have yet been discovered, police said.

In a letter to parents, GBHS Principal Vickie Plitt referred to the incident as a "very troubling situation" and assured parents a sweep of the building turned up no other cameras.

"The camera placed in the bathroom was not part of our school security camera system and was not connected to it in any way," Plitt wrote. "Our school’s system has cameras only in public locations, and not in bathrooms or locker rooms.

The officer was not identified by police and no charges have been announced by the department.

"The Police Department takes this matter seriously," said Chief of Police Larry W. Tolliver in a press release. "I immediately ordered a thorough investigation of this incident to include consultation with the State’s Attorney’s Office to ensure all legal aspects of the case were covered."
