Prince George's County 'My Brother's Keeper' Event Creates Local Opportunities

The all-day event for young men of color will take place Nov. 15.

President Obama’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ initiative will come to Prince George’s County for the first time.

Located at Oxon Hill High School, 6701 Leyte Drive, the event will connect young men of color ages 17 to 25 to local resources in order to bridge the opportunity gap facing young people.

Job resources, health, and skills training will be just some of the topics addressed by the speakers and open panel discussion 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Three Prince George’s County mayors have signed and accepted the “My Brother’s Keeper” Community Challenge. Forest Heights Mayor Jacqueline Goodall, Mount Rainier Mayor Malinda Miles, and Fairmount Heights Mayor Lillie Thompson-Martin have committed to execute strategies to benefit the youth in their areas.

“For far too long we have not worked jointly to address this crisis and I know that if this initiative can be achieved anywhere, it can be achieved here in Prince George’s County,” Forest Heights Mayor Jacqueline Goodall said in a news release. “There are numerous individuals and organizations that are available to help our parents, our children and our young men succeed. We just need to work together as a village to achieve these goals.”
