UPDATE: Accident Closes Traffic Conowingo Dam

U.S. Route 1 will be closed for at least four hours police said.

UPDATED (2:53 p.m.)—An accident at the Conowingo Dam shut down traffic on U.S. Route 1 for about nine hours Wednesday, Maryland State Police told Wednesday.

The road was reopened to traffic around 2 p.m., according to state police.

The accident, which involved farm equipment and a tractor trailer, took place shortly before 4:48 a.m. on the dam, which carries Route 1 over the Susquehanna River, according to , spokesman for .

One person was taken by Darlington Volunteer Fire Company ambulance to Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment, according to Gardiner.

As a result of the accident, a large quantity of diesel fuel spilled in the area along with other contents of the tractor trailer. The Harford County HazMat Team was called to the scene to handle the spill.

Clean-up remained underway at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the roadway was again opened to traffic by 2 p.m.

Morning commuters were urged to consider Interstate 95 and U.S Route 40 as alternate routes to cross the Susquehanna River. Southbound travelers were able to cross the river at no cost, but there are tolls on the Cecil County side of the river on both the Hatem (Route 40) and Tydings (I-95) bridges.
