Meet The Candidate: Barry Scharbrough

Asked why he's running in the 2012 Havre de Grace election, Barry Scharbrough was straight and to the point.

He's running because it's the first time he's been able.

Scharbrough, who moved to in October 2009, has been involved in a number of volunteer organizations in the city.

"From the needs of the different organizations—my community association, my American Legion Post, my Disabled American Veterans' chapter and my Masonic brothers—I felt that being on the city council I felt like I’d be in a good position to help all of my community," Scharbrough said.

Scharbrough, 47, lives in with his wife and their three cats.

He's a disabled veteran, having served four years in active duty including one year on tour in Korea.

He's spent his professional career working in human resources.

Scharbrough is a relative unknown on the local political scene, but he's picked up momentum during the election, garnering following the last week.

He said among the initiatives he'd like to see put into motion if elected would be a citizen committee for various sections of the city, providing a chain of feedback with a "top-10 list" of wants and concerns to drive more citizen involvement.

During the Scharbrough said his strengths include his professional and committee experience, which he feels would lead to an unbiased approach.

One of the constant themes in Scharbrough's conversations during the election has been bridging together segments of the city and creating a more cooperative environment in Havre de Grace.

Scharbrough said by serving on City Council, he could better serve the entire city.

"I think it would probably be a better use of time and resources to help them," Scharbrough said.
