45 Kids, Adults Displaced In Thanksgiving Day Apartment Fire In Hyattsville

Dozens of people were displaced, including 17 children, due to a building fire in Hyattsville Thanksgiving Day, officials said.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — An estimated 45 people's Thanksgiving Day plans were uprooted when their apartment complex caught fire Thursday. Fire and rescue teams from Prince George’s County and Montgomery County responded just before noon to the University City apartment complex.

According to NBC Washington DC, firefighters first found smoke pouring out of a unit on the second floor. At least 17 children were affected by the fire. The power was out in the building, but families were provided with a place to stay in the interim.

Prince George's County Fire determined that the fire was considered an accident and started in the kitchen of one of the units. Damage was estimated at $15,000, officials noted.
