• Man Arrested in Connection to Murdering His Own Mother in Prince George's County (smnewsnet.com) — Laurel residents should know police have charged a 22-year-old man with killing his mother inside their home on Gorman Avenue late Saturday night. Officers responding for a welfare check found the woman fatally injured, and the suspect was arrested at the scene and is being held without bond. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the homicide unit or Crime Solvers.

• Balboa shortens up for Jerome (brisnet.com) — A promising 2-year-old racehorse named Balboa is heading into Saturday’s Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct after a strong third in the Remsen and a sharp win in the James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel. Trainer Brittany Russell believes the colt will benefit from cutting back in distance, which could make his earlier success at Laurel a key indicator of his chances on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
