7 Pieces of Advice for Fort Meade's New Commander

Becoming a new installation commander is hard. Here are some tips that will put the Col. Brian Foley on the path to success.

Col. Brian Foley is now settling in after taking over as the new garrison commander at Fort Meade.

Foley, who comes to the area after serving as a battalion commander at Fort Bragg, has a lot to learn. We thought we'd convey to him a few pieces of friendly advice to help him get acclimated.

Be Nice to Gen. Keith Alexander - You may be the installation commander, but he's still a four-star with some important jobs. Let him win at golf, poker, Halo 4 or whatever it is you're doing together.

Hide the Accent - We know you're from Massachusetts. That's OK, but remember that this is Ravens and Orioles territory. Be careful.

Check the Burger King Before Eating There - Yeah...just check it first.

When Someone Says "Go Navy, Beat Army" Just Smile and Nod - The Navy guys and gals may even TP your house before the big football game in December. It's OK. They're good people. Just remind them that you stopped playing with boats when you were a little kid.

Wear the Fatigues - They are more comfortable, they make you appear more down to earth, and you can go hide in the woods out by the Baltimore Washington Parkway if things get tough.

Don't Touch Any Ordnance - From time to time, someone will come across an old WWII explosive that never went off. That's normal. If you find one while gardening in your backyard, leave it alone and call the experts.

Get the New PX Completed - People need a place to shop, even if it means there aren't any dirty magazines for sale anymore.
