AACS to Celebrate Homecoming Game with Field Hockey Instead of Football

The football team was scheduled to play St. John's, but after injuries decimated their roster, St. John's was forced to forfeit.

Homecoming is often times the pinnacle of high school football, but unfortunately for the students and players at , there won’t be a this year.

Students were told on Wednesday that the game, scheduled to take place between AACS and St. John’s Catholic Prep on Friday Sept. 30, would be canceled due to injuries on the St. John's team.

“The St. John’s team has been decimated by injuries over the past two weeks, leaving their team with few varsity players to compete,” said AACS Director of Athletic, Jim Domoracki, to Patch in an email. “The game will not be rescheduled.”

More than anyone, the players may feel the greatest amount of disappointment.

“Certainly our seniors are disappointed that they will not be playing the game. It is a night they have been looking forward to for some time now,” Domoracki said.

However, the AACS Athletic Director remained positive, and shifted Homecoming’s catalyst sporting-event from football, to field hockey.

Several other games are taking place on Friday, including the boys’ soccer team taking on Fulton County Christian. But “the big show” is now taking place at Arundel High School, where the AACS field hockey team will go against Pallotti.

Initially scheduled for 4 p.m. at AACS, the game was moved to 7 p.m. at Arundel to accommodate for the Homecoming atmosphere, and provide an arena where the school’s Homecoming festivities can still take place.

The AACS Marching Band still plans to perform and recognized the 2011 AACS Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees.

Even if the crowd is entertaining by the clattering of field hockey sticks and not that battering clash of football helmets, students and their families should still be able to enjoy an exciting night, said Juliet Wright, the marketing communications representative for AACS.

“When you look at it in the respect of Homecoming, this is a rare opportunity when the main even is a girls’ field hockey event,” Wright said.

“In this environment, I’m sure the camaraderie and ‘espirit de corps’ will really showcase how our boys and girls sports come together in Eagles pride.”

The field hockey game could offer high levels of excitement. The Eagles took home the championships last year in an overtime win against Key School, just like the football team did in their divisional championship game.
