Update: Construction Worker Killed in Accident at Arundel Mills

Chief Michael Cox of the fire department said the wall that killed the worker weighed 25 tons.

Update 7/29/11 3:17 p.m. - The construction worker who was killed in Friday morning's accident at Arundel Mills has been identified as Leon Ray Sax of Hanover, PA, according to Anne Arundel County Police. 

Sax, 27, was pronounced dead by Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel after a 30-foot concrete wall collapsed on he and another worker. The second worker, identified as Darwin Suazo-Jimenez, 25, of Manassas VA, was rushed to shock trauma after sustaining life-threatening injuries. 

Initially Patch was told by Chief Michael Cox of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department that Jimenez was 35.

In an interview the the Baltimore Business Journal, Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Chief Michael Cox said the concrete wall weighed about 25 tons. Cox also said the wall was in a vertical position when it fell but that na investigation is underway to determine what caused the accident. 

Sax's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy and the incident is being treated as an accident, according to police.

The Cordish Company released a statement earlier Friday that said, "All we know at this point is that a construction accident occurred this morning involving two workers in the fenced-off construction area of the Maryland Live! project, which is not accessible to the public.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the workers and their families."

 

7/29/11, 11: 52 a.m. - One person died and another man has life-threatening injuries after a wall collapsed on them outside Arundel Mills Mall Friday morning.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., emergency personnel received word that a 30-foot concrete wall fell on two construction workers while the pre-cast structure was being moved, said Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Chief Michael Cox.

One of the victims, a 35-year-old male, was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, Cox said.

Officials have not released information about the second individual, whose body is still trapped under the rubble, according to Cox.

“The operation has moved from a rescue to recovery,” Cox said.

As of 11:30 a.m., crews were awaiting the medical examiner to determine additional details and the assistance of the “collapse unit,” an engine that can pull the wreckage off the individual.

Arundel Mills Circle, located on the grounds of Arundel Mills Mall, near the Burlington Coat Factory and Off Broadway are closed to traffic while officials investigate.

The accident Friday morning marks the second time in a month that construction workers have been seriously injured while working the site.

 that a casino construction worker was hospitalized after a piece of concrete fell on his leg. Since January, developer the Cordish Company has been working on the construction site at Arundel Mills. Voters approved the plan to build a casino at Arundel Mills in November 2010.

The man trapped was 27 years old and had been working on a multi-level parking garage where slots would temporarily be housed, reported WBAL-TV.

Anne Arundel, Howard and BWI rescue teams responded to Friday's call.
