Firefighters Tend to Brush Fire at County Landfill

A fire department spokesman said the incident was under control as of 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Approximately 43 firefighters tended to a one-alarm brush fire at the Anne Arundel County landfill in Severn on Sunday afternoon.

Located at 389 Burns Crossing Rd., firefighters responded to a report of smoke at about 1:14 p.m., according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department Chief Michael Cox.

“Our folks gained access and were able to locate a brush fire,” Cox said.

A pile of debris was on fire but it did not escalate into a larger incident and was under control as of 2 p.m., Cox said. Fire officials called for four additional tankers because there were no fire hydrants close to the incident, Cox told Patch.

The spokesman said he expected the brush fire to be extinguished quickly. He also added that firefighters will likely cover the debris with special foam to prevent future fires at the landfill through the weekend.
