Goodbye Severn

Editor Jonathan Moynihan takes a look back at his experience in Severn as he gets ready to move to a new Patch town.

When I returned from Orlando in July 2010, I anticipated a long, tiresome job search, one that would ultimately put me in public relations or some other communications job.

I knew journalism was “dying,” and my hopes for a job in the field were small. But after connecting with a friend from high school, I learned about a new company called Patch.

It focused on news for “under-served” towns and community engagement at the smallest of levels. It was an exciting opportunity, and after being offered the opportunity to become a local editor, I was giddy with excitement.

I was assigned to cover Severn, a town I had only visited a few times. I was pumped for the challenge. Little did I know that more than a year later, leaving Severn would be so hard.

As you probably noticed, my byline has appeared less and less on Severn Patch, and that’s not by accident. Recently, Patch offered me the opportunity to move to another Patch town and I decided to take it.

I will no longer be reporting for Severn Patch, but I look back fondly on my time as editor.

Whether covering a  at the Department of Transportation, meeting a  right here in Severn or covering probably (go Old Mill!), reporting for Severn Patch has been enriching to say the least.

I’ve been blessed to meet so many of you in the community, and I’ll always look back at this season of life with great amazement that it all happened so quickly. I embark on a new chapter proudly and with great excitement. I’ve seen a within a few days, thanks to the community’s response, but I do wish I could have done more about that at Telegraph and Reece roads.

When I look back at Severn, I know I’ll do it with great memories and even greater people. I want to thank all of you that helped me get some traction in the community—I couldn’t have done my job without you.

My hope is that your passion for Patch continues as the site becomes integrated with Odenton Patch, covered by. Tim will be around at local events and continue to offer top-notch reporting on everything you care about in Severn. If you haven't already, check out the Odenton Patch Facebook page and follow Tim's updates on Twitter.

Thanks again for an amazing time and I wish you all the best.
