Lollar Talks Governor's Race to GOPers in Severn
The Charles County Republican is expected to hold a bus tour of the state next month.
Charles Lollar hasn't explicitly said he's running for Governor in the State of Maryland, but he dropped his strongest hints yet on Tuesday in front of a group of Republicans in Severn.Â
At a meeting of the District 32 Republican Club, the former Marine and businessman from Charles County said he was planning a statewide bus tour in September and urged club members to begin preparations for the 2014 elections.Â
"We're serious, because we believe we're in a serious predicament right now," Lollar said. "Unless we do something soon, unless we turn some corners, we need more than someone who can give a good speech."
Lollar emphasized the need for Republicans to campaign in typical Democratic strongholds in Baltimore City and Prince George's and Montgomery Counties. He also said the Republican Party must stop any infighting and fully support its candidates in the general election.
Lollar won the GOP nomination for District 5 in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010, but was defeated by Steny Hoyer.Â
If he formally enters the gubernatorial race, he could face a long list of opponents in the primary, including Harford County Executive David Craig, Rep. Ron George, and former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele.Â
The District 32 Republicans on Tuesday also heard from Alan Rzepkowski, the chairman of the Republican State Central Committee for Anne Arundel County, who said it was time for members of the party to have stronger showings in the general elections.Â
"Our job now is to look at 2014 and work to get more Republicans elected," he said. "We've got to do more than raise a lot of money and win a primary. We need to win a general election."Â
