Manning Supporters React to Verdict

A group of activists gathered outside the Reece Road gate at Fort Meade Tuesday.

Supporters of Bradley Manning expressed dismay at the news that the former Army intelligence worker was convicted on multiple counts of espionage.

While Manning was acquitted of a serious charge of aiding the enemy, he could face more than 100 years in prison after being found guilty on 17 other charges relating to the disclosure of classified information to WikiLeaks. He previously pleaded guilty to three charges.

"The fact that he's been convicted of anything is disturbing to us," said Dave Eberhardt, a peace activist from Baltimore. "He reported a war crime. He should not be on trial...those committing the war crimes should be on trial."

Eberhardt was among a handful of activists outside the Reece Road gate at Fort Meade who anxiously awaited the verdict Tuesday afternoon. Many wore t-shirts simply reading "Truth."

Several motorists who drove buy honked in support of Manning, but at least one yelled "Traitor!"

Max Obuszewski of Baltimore, who was holding a "Honk for Bradley Manning" sign, responded, "No! He's a hero!"
