No Plunge, But Pride for Arundel Freshman

As a freshman at Arundel High, Kaylee Scott was new to the idea of plunging into the icy waters at Sandy Point State Park. But she was prepared to do it last week as part of the annual “Frigid Friday” event to support Special Olympics Maryland. 

She’ll have to wait another year, however, as the event was cancelled due to bad weather.

“We were all up early, we had everything packed,” Scott said. “It’s just a bummer.” 

Despite the disappointment, Scott can still take pride in her fundraising prowess, as she was the school’s top fundraiser with $1,850 collected. In fact, she raised more money than all but a handful of students and staff across the county. 

An honor roll student who is involved in the Arundel High theatre program, Scott leveraged her relationships with family and friends, including co-workers at Maryland Residential Management Co. 

The Arundel High team is ranked fifth in fundraising among all teams in Maryland, trailing only South River High among schools in the state.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Arundel had raised $36,983. It had set a recruitment goal of 300 team members, but 443 had been prepared to plunge. 

At present, there are no plans to try to reschedule the plunge. The cancellation came after the county schools moved its participation in the plunge a week after other schools in the state, in order to accommodate exams. 

“Maybe it will happen next year,” Scott said. “I still have three more years.”
