Police Rescue Two People from Heavy Flooding in Severn

A 63-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were clinging to a guardrail for support near Old Mill Road and Burns Crossing Road.

Police rescued two people Thursday morning after they found themselves stranded in a heavy flowing flood current near Burns Crossing Road and Old Mill Road in Severn, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Initially, officers responded to a report that a 63-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were trapped in a car stuck in several feet of water. Upon arrival, police said the roadway was completely flooded and that the two people were out of their car and holding onto a guardrail for support against the rushing water.

Police said Lt. Steve Thomas and Cpl. Erica Heinecke tied themselves to one another with their water rescue ropes and began entering the floodwaters to approach the two people.

Thomas rescued the 63-year-old man after he saw the victim lose his footing, sending him underwater and under the guardrail. Police said Thomas was then able to lift the man enough to give him a breath. He provided assistance with the couple until more help arrived, according to police.

It took additional help from other officers to rescue the two people who were taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
