Repairing Storm-Damaged Roads Could Take Longer Than 30 Days

The Department of Public Works said streets that were washed away from flash flooding and may not be fixed for another month.

Flash flooding literally washed away roads in Severn, some of which may not be repaired for more than 30 days according to the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) and Bureau of Highway (BOH) officials.

In an announcement released by the DPW and BOH, repairing damaged roads and re-opening closed streets is a top priority. The release also said officials expect most closed roads to be completely open in the next 30 days. However, many of the closed or damaged roads in Severn are expected to undergo reconstruction projects that will take more than 30 days.

"Extended lane reductions in Severn will continue beyond 30 days on Sandy Hill Road from Quarterfield Road to the cul-de-sac and Old Oak Road from Bannister Road to Teppers Road," according to the release.

The extended wait time for the roads in Severn are due to the extensive damage and extremely complex nature of repairs, according to the DPW and BOH.

"The current estimated repair cost total associated with these storm-related repairs is between $1.25 and 1.5 million," according to the release. "The road closures and road segment lane reduction list and detour maps have been posted on the County’s website at www.aacounty.org and will be consistently updated. Road closure and detour signs have been posted at all locations. Citizens are urged to respect barriers placed for the safety of the traveling public."
